I have seen a lot of people in other forums and on youtube discuss homemade mre's for a 72hr bug out bag. So I thought I would chime in on the subject. Weight and space are always a concern when packing anything, but I make extra allowances for food and water. I have seen people vacuum seal pouches, but I choose not to do that. My method is to pack 9 ziplock bags on which I write the date it was packed on. This way I can get the food out and leave the utensils in the bag when rotating stock. Most importantly, I pack nothing that need cooking(warming is nice, but not required) and nothing that needs water to be added(except for drink mix).No offense to people who take ramein noodles or pasta pouches, but that requires using your drinking water or packing extra water, and extra water is very heavy. My primary list includes: 6-Hormel Complete Meals(for lunches and dinners), Peanut butter Crackers, Vienna Sausages, Snackwell Snacks, Tuna Salad Kits, Breakfast Bars. When I go to places to eat thats has sealed packs with salt, pepper, fork, and napkin in it I grab a few extra fpr use in my ziplock bags. 3 ziplock bags = 1 days food. I choose a day out of the week(usually Saturday) and pull the oldest dated ziplocks (3) and pull the food out to eat for that day. Draw a line through the old date, write the current date and repack the bags with fresh food. Shelf-Life is not an issue given the frequency of rotation, Cost of my mre's is not an issue as I use them instead of buying extra food for that day. Every meal I pack generously, it means a little extra weight, but makes up for it in moral and comfort and the 72hr part can be extended a little if needed. I also keep a mess fit and sterno to heat the food when possible. Open fires will give away location.
