Long term food storage

For all of you looking for a economical solution for long term food storage here is what I recommend.

-Buy non-perishable foods with the most time before the "best if used by date"
-Canned goods are generally good for 1 to years or longer after their date
-Items like canned and vacuum packed tuna and salmon are very nutritious and they have long shelf life, 3 to 5
years.
-When buying bulk items like grains, rice, and pasta, break them down into smaller serving sizes and either vacuum
pack or put them in good quality ziplocs and remove as much air as possible for freshness and space concerns.
-When buying food storage items try to but food that is precooked, that way you have edible meals if you are without the means to cook anything.

-A lot of inexpensive items can be bought at wholesale grocery outlets and club shopping like Sam's Club, Costco, or BJ's wholesale.
-To save you a lot of money buy the 5 gallon Home Depot buckets to store your food in. They are much cheaper than
food grade buckets and are just as safe. Since they are not food grade I do recommend that you line them with
mylar bags if you are going to be putting unpackaged items like grains, oats, pasta, rice and bags of flour and sugar.
-One final tip, try to include some bottles of water, some plastic eating utensils in each bucket and mark the date stored on the bucket.
